Work Experience Jack Dickenson-Fogg

This week I have had my work experience at Lincat, and have thoroughly enjoyed it. To begin with I was quite nervous, but as soon as I arrived I was made very welcome. I have been in various departments throughout the week, which gave me a good insight into the many different roles within the company.

On my first day I had an introduction with Nick McDonald, the Marketing Director. In this Introduction I was informed of the many products made at the factory in Lincoln, and some of the basic background information of Lincat. This then set me up to begin working in the marketing department. During this time in the marketing department I had various different projects to complete, my first project was to evaluate the Lincat website and compare it to the other catering appliance manufacturer’s websites. Then I had my health and safety talk, with Paul Bilboa, this included a tour around the factory and a quick quiz on back injury. After completing a short course in health and safety I was awarded a certificate in manual handling.

On my second day, I continued my marketing projects, which was to help write the new eNewsletter. In the eNewsletter I had to write about the new products and events that were happening within the company. After finishing the eNewsletter, I got to enter customer’s details into the customer relationship management software.

Wednesday, I had the chance to go around other departments; this included the UK sales, export sales, purchasing, service, accounts and materials control. I was even allowed to purchase glass, needed to produce display units, worth over £12,000, in materials control. I also inserted some orders into the UniPlan Software, in UK sales.

On the fourth day, I help Paul Hickman, the chef at Lincat, test out combi oven; we even made breakfast in the combi ovens for the people in the offices. We used the combi oven to make some lunch and tested them using a sponge mixture to evaluate how the combi oven cooked the sponge evenly. At the end of our test I had to write up a report about the experiments we had done on the combi ovens.

Finally, on the last day, I had a look at the statistics of the eNewsletter, which I found really interesting because you could see who opened the email, where and when they opened it. Also I finished of my marketing projects, which included entering more information on the customer relationship management software and research other combi ovens on sale. At the end of the day I got to write this blog.

Overall, I really enjoyed my time at Lincat, and have gained a lot of experience from this week at the company. I have seen how the business works and have had an insight into the many roles there are at Lincat, and in every business. I think that this experience will help me to decide what I would like to do in the future, and help me decide what to do next after school. I was really made welcome and had a fun time at Lincat, because of this I would encourage students to go to Lincat for their work experience because I think it would be worthwhile and I think they would have a great time working at Lincat.

Sounds like you had a great time with Lincat, but the big question is did it help you to decide what type of work you would like to get into after school?
