‘Barefoot Baker’ goes slow
When it comes to baking the perfect loaf, Dave Dobson is convinced that slowly does it best. Dave runs artisan Barefoot Bakery from his home in Spalding, Lincolnshire, in his bare feet (it gets pretty hot in there)! He believes bread that is mixed, shaped and left to prove naturally for over 20 hours before being baked is not just tastier than the mass produced bread we buy from supermarkets, it is healthier too. (Supermarket bread is often made from modified flour and the addition of enzymes to make the yeast work faster so that a loaf can be produced in under an hour.)
Southside Café starts-up with Lincat
When a new catering establishment was required at Lincolnshire County Council’s Oak House business start-up centre, it seemed fitting for it to be a start-up café. As an experienced caterer who had always worked for others, Mary Haitt was pleased to have the opportunity to develop her own start-up business at the centre – Southside Café.
The ‘Spud’s Plaice fryer’ – a new Lincat record breaker…
In October last year, Rod Needham, the new owner of ‘Spud’s Plaice’, an Anglesey-based chip shop, called Lincat’s service department to order new elements for his counter-top fryer.
A straightforward request you might think, given the fact that Lincat maintains a stockholding of over half a million spare parts and components. However it soon became clear that Rod’s fryer was rather special – due to its advanced age.
Christmas Greetings
Every year, at this time, millions of Christmas cards are sent from suppliers to their customers; we receive plenty ourselves! We have long felt that this can be a somewhat impersonal activity with cards sent unsigned and often not addressed to an individual. We have tended to “opt out” of this annual tradition and this year will be no exception.
But we are not Scrooges! This year we shall mark Christmas by making a donation to the hospitality and catering industry’s benevolent fund – Hospitality Action. This registered charity raises funds to help hospitality people who have fallen on hard times. Click here to view a case study which shows the type of work undertaken by Hospitality Action. We hope that you might consider joining us in supporting this worthwhile cause this Christmas.

Lincat Equipment – cheaper today than in 1972
Not that we’re hoarders or anything, but I came across a 1972 price list the other day. Lincat was founded in 1971 so this must be the earliest piece of sales literature still in existence. Nothing like today’s 48-page, full-colour masterpiece, it was a simple 2?sided photocopy (probably “photostat” back then) of a typed list. (more…)
